Preface

The book you hold in your hands is the main outcome of a 7 country project, entitled „Training teachers to enhance pupils’representation in Europe", which ran from 2000 to 2003.Our main aim for this tool is to provide a model for adults, both theoretical and practical, designed to increase young peoples’ active involvement in the life of school and society. In each chapter we gathered texts andexperiences from each of the 7 member countries. As we are aware of the importance and complexity of the topic we decided not just to concentrateon pupils’ representation but also to incorporate ideas on education for citizenship. For both topics we have a comparative study and information about the situation in the member countries in chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 3 is a summary of good practices, which can be used as a method handbook. We tried to find a way to present this for ease of use. The introduction to this section explains the relationship of these methods to our topic, and how they have beThe 4th chapter shows a model of a seminar which has been designed for use as a training programme. In the final chapter we have described our project, our organizations and our team members.

Our hope in publishing this work is that we can encourage, through the work of our colleagues, young people who will be more committed to the society in which they live.
